We painted the upper walls with a denim paint technique. You can find lots of "How To's" on Google and Pinterest. I have used several of these techniques in the past. Most use a first coat of butter yellow and then the brushed blue glaze top coat. I painted the room dark blue and then glazed with a light blue. As I rolled the glaze on the painted wall, I used a wallpaper brush to make the cross hatched pattern of rough denim.
Texas loves old tin toys. Antique cars, trucks and airplanes. So we designed the room around found and gathered treasures. Some of these cool things were salvaged from the hundred plus year old basement, so no costs were incurred.
The old replica Airmail postage stamp shelf was built from old leftover wood and chalk paint. Texas loves his old tin police car showcased.
I played with Modern Masters Metal Effects Paints for all the rust and tumble.
The Route 66 sign was built from old wood scraps. Bolts and hinges were painted and rusted with the iron paint from Modern Masters Metal Effects Paints
Texas now has a great place to hang coats and his backpack.
The turquoise was created using Modern Masters copper paint.
I made a true to size licence plate with his name and date of birth. I modeled the lettering with Durham's Rock Hard Putty and then painted with Modern Masters Metal Effects Paint. Iron and copper.
Just think of the possibilities. Any name, state, date of birth. They are painted on light weight wood and look and feel like rusted metal. I can create one of any state, year or theme. Just give out a shout and we can figure it all out. Hmmm. Rhymes. It's late I guess.
The old dresser was dressed in red, white and blue chalk paint.
Using an old cardboard container and old brass lamp parts, I built Texas an replica Texaco oilcan lamp with an Edison light bulb.
Printed Texaco logos were decoupaged on each side of the can.
The spout is just a crushed cardboard paper tube painted and rusted with Modern Maters Metal Effects Paints.
Texas now has a fun and functional room.
My trip to Salt Lake was amazing. Five days of hard fast paced painting is my idea of a great vacation.
